Our Mission
At the heart of MamboYá lies a multi-dimensional mission: to enrich the cultural tapestry of
Orlando through the art of Latin dance. We are committed to creating a nurturing environment
that fosters personal and community growth, enabling connections that transcend the dance
floor and echo throughout the city. Our aim is to elevate the Latin dance experience, providing a
stage for local artists to shine and crafting events and workshops that showcase the diversity
and unity of our community.
Our Story
At MamboYá Dance Company, we’re not just about steps and beats; we’re about stories,
connections, and the joy of dance. Established in Orlando in 2022 by Miguel Malagón-Cordero
and Aminat Escoto-Lawal, two military Veterans with a profound dedication to Latin dance, our
journey is propelled by a shared passion and a commitment to service. Dance has been a
transformative force in our lives, offering not just an art form to master, but a community to
belong to.
From the moment we stepped into the world of Latin dance, we were greeted with open arms.
This sense of belonging and acceptance fueled our desire to give back and create a space
where everyone feels welcome. At MamboYá, we strive to reciprocate this warmth and
inclusivity, building a community where every dancer, whether beginner or seasoned, feels at
home.
Our devotion to dance goes beyond personal passion; it’s a commitment to nurturing a vibrant,
supportive, and inclusive dance community in Orlando. We believe in the power of dance to
unite, inspire, and uplift, and we’re dedicated to sharing this experience with all who walk
through our doors.
The Meaning of MamboYa
- In Past Time: "Ya" connects us to the history and Afro-Cuban roots of dance and music, honoring the traditions and legacies that shape our practice.
- Immediately, Right Now: It signifies the urgency and excitement of dancing in the moment—there's no better time to dance than now.
- In the Present Tense: This reflects our connection with the current dance community, celebrating the vibrant culture of Latin dance that thrives today.
- In Future Time: It speaks to the growth and evolution of MamboYá and the Orlando dance community, looking forward to the new traditions we'll create and the new dancers we'll inspire
